CardLess Cashtown
Residents of Cashtown are putting their credit cards in the sock drawer for
100 hours next week. New Jersey-based Champion Mortgage is launching the
"Great American Credit Card Swipeout" asking the 9,000 families
of Cashtown, Pennsylvania and the surrounding area to sign a pledge to use only
cash for all their consumer needs for the four days beginning at 8:00 a.m.,
July 31.

School Spending
The screwy economy is affecting this year's back-to-school shopping. American
Express found that parents and teenagers plan to spend an average of $527 on
clothing and school supplies, down $21 or 4% from last year.

Tax Card
As federal income tax rebate checks hit mailboxes this week, Kmart has switched
the blue light on a special Tax Rebate Cash Card. Consumers who cash their
rebate checks at Kmart may convert their rebate check into a cash card with a
five percent bonus.

A new Internet-centric MasterCard was introduced this week that offers rewards in the form of a re-loadable, prepaid MasterCard. The new Chase i-Card enables cardholders to earn a 1% reward on each purchase made with the card, online or offline, with rewards received in the form of a Webcertificate, the online gift certificate developed by Ecount.

Debit Rewards
Using debit cards, without the PIN, has rewards. A Missouri bank is offering $25,000 cash and a Florida bank is offering a PT Cruiser as grand prizes in separate VISA Check Card promotions. MO-based Commerce Bank re-launched a promotion this summer to encourage debit cardholders to sign for purchases instead of using a PIN.
